Israel offers top quality medical care to those who can afford it, and even those who cannot (and must therefore rely solely on the public health care system) are entitled to a relatively broad (by international standards) “basket “ of governmental approved medical services.
Budgetary considerations, however, render the “basket” of services unquestionably inadequate when it comes to the following crucial medical services:
- Organ transplants. Tragically around a hundred people a year in Israel die while waiting for approval from their health fund (Kupat Cholim) to go abroad.
- Many life saving medications are unapproved as they have been deemed to have too high a cost/benefit ratio for society as a whole.
- Treatment abroad, if covered by your health fund (Kupat Cholim) is dependent on an approval committee with a limited budget.
- Many of the top surgeons do not work with the Kupot Cholim and, even if they do, co-payments are high and not all patients have the ability to wait many months until an appointment is available.
This all remains accurate even when one purchases the top tier of the Kupat Cholim’s medical upgrade package (Shaban).
The Israeli insurance companies offer reasonably priced private/supplemental health insurance policies that resolve the above issues, in addition to providing coverage for other important concerns.
If you have not yet purchased a private/supplemental health insurance policy for you and your family, I strongly urge you to do so without delay, while everyone is healthy and insurable.
